Being Good and Looking Good: 2 Maccabees 6
An Example of Nobility and a Memorial of Courage
Fr. Pat delivered this meditation on Eleazar the Scribe from 2 Maccabees 6:18-31 on October 3, 2012.
“It is insufficient for a man to keep his conscience pure before God; that’s not enough. Because of the social responsibilities that are part of our own being, it is imperative that a man’s conscience should consider always the moral advantage of other human beings. Any time I make a good decision to the moral disadvantage of my fellow man, I may as well have broken all the law. None of us either goes to Heaven or to Hell by himself. No man in this world, not even the hermit is responsible solely for himself.
