The Evangelizing of the Theotokos

Translated strictly, the Greek name of the Feast we call the Annunciation is The Evangelizing of the Theotokos. In other words, when the Church seeks to identify the significance of this feast day, she places her emphasis less on the objective fact of the Incarnation than on the subjective experience of a woman who hears and believes the proclamation of the Gospel. Fr. Pat preached this homily on the eve of the Feast of the Annunciation, March 24, 2022.

This lecture strives to explain five hundred years of Church History (from 800 to 1300) in one hour.

This presentation was given on December 1, 2022, at Archangel Michael Orthodox Church, Broadview Heights, Ohio, as part of that church’s 100th Anniversary Celebration. I am grateful to them for giving me permission to post this video on Fr. Pat’s webpage and YouTube channel.

The intro and outtro music is taken from a work by JS Bach entitled Aria variata alla maniera italiana (in the Italian manner), written around 1709 and found in the Andreas Bach Book. The work consists of a theme and ten variations, somewhat similar to the Goldberg Variations. I used the beginning of Variation 1 for the intro music and the ending of Variation 10 for the outtro music. The performance is by Brendan Kinsella, who has generously placed it in the public domain.
